GIVEAWAY: Can you really have a birthday party Additive Free?

Being in a small country town I'm not really a part of any mother's groups or the like. But I do constantly hear the battle that goes on between parents and the search for the 'best' party. Sometimes I see parents trying to make things SO much fun and put in so much effort because they are worried that the kids won't enjoy it. They forget - Children, especially babies and toddlers, are easy to please.

And how good would it be, to host a party where all those little things that make children happy - chocolate cake, icy poles, lollies, etc. were readily available, but they don't leave you with hyperactive  misbehaving children who have had far too much nasty food colouring and additives?

Well, Let's Party Additive Free by Melanie Avery gives you the chance to do so, hassle free!

You might recall just before Christmas, I reviewed and gave away Melanie's other book, Let's Celebrate Christmas Additive Free and that was a hit. I whipped up some honey and mustard prawns from her book and they were so delicious!

Now, you might be surprised to find things like moist chocolate cake, biscuits, icy poles and all those things do-able, but they really are. And Melanie thinks of everything by including the best brands for additive free ingredients and a shopping list at the back of the book with all items being easy to find at any Australian supermarket.

I made some of these yummy icy poles from the book as I figured with all the hot weather we are having, they won't go to waste! And they certainly haven't. They are filled with delicious fruit juice - watermelon, strawberries, mangoes and oranges. It's so nice to feel like I'm giving my little guy a big treat (with no horrible side effects!)

You can see Melanie's complete range of books at her website as well as lots of handy tips and resources!

GIVEAWAY: If you'd like to win a copy of Melanie's book, Let's Party Additive Free, it couldn't be easier. Just fill in the form below and bingo! It could be all yours :-)

  2. I think additives can have a massive impact on children's behaviour, making them hyper and even sometimes agressive, natural ingredients are so much better and safer.

  3. Oh, how awesome! Since my boy's been tested for nuts and eggs allergies we've become extremely vigilant in the food products we buy and what we cook.
An additive free cookbook would be a wonderful resource in our household!

  4. I think it's better for you, but also there's no reason why additive free food can't taste good.

  6. Tell me why you think it might be worthwhile to reduce additives in your family's diet?

Getting rid of those hidden nasties that cause so many side affects and build up over time to cause allergics and intolerances, is very worthwhile to start reducing them and start now!

  7. There are enough, too many, chemicals/additives that we come into contact with each day without deliberately ingesting them.

  8. additives have an immediate negative effect on my kids - I don't believe they are necessary, and worry about the long term affects on those little growing bodies :( This book sounds *fantastic* - kids birthday parties seem to be the worst offenders when it comes to colouring and additives!!

  10. the issues we have with our kids and weight and health issues its very important to watch what we feed them and whats in it and what it does to our bodies

  11. Apart from the behavioural aspects - my girls are both at high risk of cancer based on family history, so having my family eating as "clean" as possible is a massive priority for me. I also heard recently that what you feed a child til the age of 3 determines how they'll guide their own eating habits for life. I have nothing against the very occasional pop top or biscuit and I try not to get obsessive but a healthy diet is SOOOO important!

  12. My 11 month old is currently on the elimination diet as he has allergies and intolerances to a number of foods. The more additives, the greater his reaction.
This would be perfect for his first birthday party so he can enjoy too!!!!

  19. You just want to give them the best possible start in life don't you? So, the more 'pure' you can keep their food the better! Trouble is, we are all so busy and life is complicated. I find it hard sometimes to be creative with flavours. I'm sure a book like this would really help.

  20. So my kids can learn how to be healthy and put the right foods and drinks in their bodies from a young age. Also would be great for me and hubby to eat fresher foods without additives so we give ourselves the best shot at growing old healthy.
